When Politics and Morality Stop Matching: An EQ Perspective on Moral Dissonance in a Divided Moment
There are moments in public life when people feel more than disagreement. They feel disorientation.
This is one of those moments.
Recent conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran has intensified an already volatile emotional climate. At the same time, exiled Iranians and other members of the Iranian diaspora have continued to speak publicly against the Islamic Republic, with many expressing anguish over the regime’s repression and hope for a freer future. Iran’s population is roughly 91.6 million, and reporting in recent weeks has highlighted both the human toll of conflict and the visible anti-regime activism among Iranians abroad.
What makes this moment especially revealing is not only the conflict itself. It is the moral confusion it exposes in ordinary people.
Many individuals who speak passionately about liberation, justice, and freedom suddenly become internally conflicted when the possibility of liberation arrives through a political figure they deeply dislike. Others, who normally frame themselves as defenders of the oppressed, appear more focused on preserving ideological consistency than confronting the reality of authoritarian brutality. Still others feel trapped between competing loyalties: dislike for a president, distrust of military action, sympathy for civilians, and horror at the behavior of a regime that has oppressed its own people for decades.
This is not just politics. This is moral dissonance.
And emotional intelligence gives us a powerful way to understand it.
